NEC decided to use SMD electrolytic capacitors in the TurboDuo (USA/Canada) and PC Engine Duo (Japan) Relatively new technology, these capacitors were of lower quality compared to what was used in the TurboGrafx-16 / PC Engine.  As a result, they have all leaked now. You'll notice issues like no audio, the CD-ROM drive doesn't work or worst, unit won't turn on.

You can see pictures of the leaked electrolytic as found under the capacitors when they're removed.  We've successfully restored dozens of these PACs to working condition.

A comprehensive repair includes the following:

• remove all the old electrolytic capacitors
• clean / restore the capacitor landings
• fix any broken traces / vias 
• electrolytic capacitors will be replaced by high quality Japanese brand (Nichicon, Panasonic, Rubycon, ...)
• calibrate the laser

NOTE: Other NEC consoles do not require their capacitors to be replaced because NEC used through hole capacitors.  This includes all the original PC Engine, TurboGrafx-16 and PC Engine Duo-R/-RX.
