It's common for one or both Nintendo Virtual Boy LCD screens to fail. This is caused because Nintendo chose to glue the LCD flex ribbon to the circuit board. With age, the glue holding the flex ribbon dries up, releases and the LCD screen fails.
A comprehensive repair includes the following:
- Remove both LCD screens from the Virtual Boy headset
- Replace the ribbon cable Nintendo used with a new soldered on ribbon
- Test the system to make sure it's 100% operational
NOTE(S):
- The Virtual Boy unit must boot (music sound when turned on, even if nothing shows up on screen)
- This service is to fix both LCD screens (even if only 1 has failed)
- In some cases, a fix might not be possible. We've had cases where 1 or more lines are still missing after the repair. This is due to an LED bulb in the LCD burning out due to age. This can't be fixed. The only repair is a replacement of the LCD from another Virtual Boy.
NEW FOR 2025:
I've been fixing the old Virtual Boy LCD flex ribbons under a microscope for over a decade. While this fix is permanent and works great, moving forward I decided to no longer use this old method. The original Nintendo ribbon cables I see coming in are starting to fall apart due to corrosion (the copper in them is turning black)
I now stock brand new replacement LCD flex ribbon cables and replace the flex for all customers rather than reuse the old ones. You can see a picture of the new flex ribbon cable next to the old one in the pictures here.
